Shikata ga nai. The only way to respond to the unfortunate set of circumstances that led me to a job with the Crimson Swords. Shikata ga nai. It can't be helped.

I was only 19 at the time. A walking stereotype of the 'pale and interesting' kind. My pale skin comes mainly from my polish father. My mousey brown hair I inherited from my Scottish mother but I have always died it. At the time it was a dark metallic blue. It's purple now. Add to this a short black leather skirt, purple and black stripped knee-high socks and a purple top and I was a classic case of gothic kawaii (or maybe that should be kowai)! I was also a habitual dark hacker and shy computer nerd which made me a typical goth-girl, kawaii/kowaii otaku. I was also just beginning to come to terms with the fact that I'm also a lesbian, just to paint the fully complete picture of post-teen female angst.

Not to blow my own trumpet too much but I'm shit hot when it comes to hacking. Even back then I was up there with the greatest of them. Cyberspace was my playground and no level of black IC could stop me. In my augmented reality world I would be sipping coffee from a styrafoam cup in a run down cafe, watching people go by whilst simultaneously thrusting my online consciousness into places it had no business being. The particular place that my disembodied self had been visiting at the start of my tale was Fujimoto Industries main accountancy vault. Fujimoto is a company that specialises in entertainment software. Online roleplaying games where socially disconnected girls and boys like me can live out fantasy lives where we actually feel like somebodies, even if it is just a lie hiding the truth of our dull and empty lives. Unknown to me at the time the public front of Fujimoto hid a dark and sinister underbelly having links to a particularly powerful yakuza clan involved in human trafficking, drug dealing and - here comes the weird part - human sacrifice and the occult. But I'm getting ahead of myself.

Her name was Uchida Hotaru and she was the most beautiful creature I had ever seen. Long, straight black hair over lightly tanned skin. Large dark eyes that seemed to swallow your soul. Rich, full lips always painted a deep crimson. A smile that could make you instantly wet. Hotaru lived up to her name. Like a firefly she was delicate and graceful but also unpredictable, passionate and at times intense. I never questioned why she approached me on the sub-level shuttle that day or what it was about a shy, hair dyed half polish goth that attracted a beautiful and vibrant Japanese woman in her mid twenties. Never look a gift horse in the mouth. What you don't know can't hurt you. Two sayings that should be outed for the lying and inaccurate statements that they are. We talked for so long I missed my stop and we met again the next day and the next. I was too shy to broach the subject of sex and to be honest at first I was unsure of Hotaru's sexuality. For about a month our relationship was intense but purely platonic but I was smitten. I never suspected the connection that this beautiful woman had to the Pink Lotus Association or that her interest in me had something to do with a certain file I had downloaded from the Fujimoto archives that was slowly being decrypted by a particularly sophisticated piece of cracking code that I had thrown together one Sunday morning.
