Since all enlisted crew members aboard the VoidWalker are considered equal in terms of their particular area of expertise, there is no large command structure in place as such. However, there is a chain of command in place.

At the top of the chain of command is the captain. The captain has clearance for access to all areas of the ship, except for technical data on the Black Box itself. Only the Black Box creator, Dr. Rhiannon Smith can overrule a direct order from the captain. Even so, her power in this matter is only limited to the Black Box and its operation. In all other cases, she is answerable to both the captain and the first officer.

The captain will be asked to appoint a first officer. This person takes direct orders from the captain and will take command in the event of the captain being unable to carry out the mission. The first officer may be selected form any one of the other crew members.

All other crew members take direct orders from the captain and the first officer. Their individual roles then dictate their level of security clearance and command structure. For example, the computer specialist will have command priority (after the first officer) in matters regarding E.V.E. The pilot will have priority over helm systems, and so on.

In the case of the captain being compromised the crew can, as a whole, relieve the captain of duty. This must be agreed by all crew members and is subject to a thorough psychiactric examination of the captain by the ship's counsellor. The counsellor will then have to justify in court the crew's decision once a mission is complete.

If both the captain and the first officer is relieved of duty, the ship's counsellor may decide which crew member should take command, based on their psychological profiles. If the counsellor is not available then the crew must decide the chain of command between themselves.
